CHICKS is a genre-defying short film about a shy teen who anxiously arrives at a slumber party hosted by a group of popular, unapologetically confident girls. What starts off as a bubbly, cotton-candy colored sleepover quickly spirals when Polly discovers that she’s actually the heart of their bizarre nighttime ritual.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT:
CHICKS is a mashup of the stereotypical bubblegum-pink world of the teenage girl and an absurdly twisted coming of age catharsis like no other.
I was very shy growing up, always worried about what people thought about me and was afraid to fully be myself. Strangely, the one personality trait that I never felt judged for was being a tomboy. I rejected all things feminine and would NEVER be caught wearing the color pink. Now it’s half my closet.
In the media, femininity is often reduced to the butt of a joke, or otherwise not taken seriously. Many female characters are reduced into demeaning categories: dumb, slut, bitch, crazy ex... the list goes on. Femme characters in media are typically pitted against each other, and you can practically guess what’s gonna happen when an outsider girl goes over to the house of the intimidatingly confident popular girls. If it’s a chick-flick: makeover time! If it’s a horror film: bloody murder, most likely. Why can't a female-identifying character enjoy glittery pink nail polish but be as multi-dimensional as any other character?
Despite the unraveling absurdity of CHICKS, it’s ultimately a fun and subversive coming-out-of-your-shell story. It just happens to also be a bloody dinosaur chicken worshipping cult…but y'know, #justgirlythings!!
I’m so humbled and inspired by the talent, passion, and dedication of every single person that helped make this weird little movie possible. They’re a cast and crew made up of mostly young femme and BIPOC filmmakers that I’m honored to have crossed paths with.
